Health Insurance in Slovakia

Posted by Margarete on 24 June 2009

A few weeks ago I received a question from a person who wants to obtain health insurance for a set period of time in Slovakia.

Since health care is provided to everyone through the social system, if you will be working for a Slovak company or an international organization/company that legally employs people in Slovakia, then your company will automatically take care of arranging coverage for you.

If you are not going to be working or are going to be a visitor in Slovakia for a longer period of time, then the best thing you can do is get health insurance directly from a Slovak provider. I’ve done this a few times for periods of 2 months or longer. The two insurers I have personal experience with are:

  • Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa, a.s – http://www.vszp.sk
They have a link for English on their home page though it doesn’t provide very specific information.
  • Dôvera zdravotná poisťovňa, a.s – http://dovera.sk

Since I didn’t (and still don’t) speak Slovak well enough to be able to get it set up on my own, I always had someone who could call or go to their offices with me to get it all arranged. In my experience it wasn’t very complicated and not expensive at all. They just provide a contract, ask you how long you will need the insurance, and then once you’ve completed the paperwork and paid, they provide a card that says you are insured.

It’s possible to get health insurance in the US from an American provider that will cover you overseas. I have also done this. They tend to be a little more expensive, however, and I was concerned that if I needed to use it in Slovakia that a Slovak doctor’s office or hospital wouldn’t accept it. Luckily I never had reason to test it out.

hey margarete I too have had some dealings with short term travel insurance when travelling to and in slovakia for an extended period of time ...the company's name is seven corners and for your information their web site is as follows: www.sevencorners.com . Luckily ,I have had no need to access this in my travels . They do have a good comprehensive policy though and of course it is a little pricey....but if you need it ...price doesn't really matter it's the coverage and follow through...this company will do a month by month policy or whatever ...tailored to your travels..... Thanks for the slovak offices for insurance ... I was unaware of this fact... Off to bojnice and bardejov for a month in august maj sa dobre ....Joe
