A Great Website on Czech and Slovak Interests
I recently came across a very interesting website called Czech Folks. There’s quite a lot to read and navigate through, but the centerpiece is the collection of articles they have on topical events happening in Czechia and sometimes in Slovakia too. All articles are written in English but have Czech translations connected. This can be of interest to those who may know some Czech and wish to brush up their skills.
The articles are of a variety of interests and are well written. For example, in the article, Oh, That Disgusting Cumin!, the differences between kmín – cumin and rasca – caraway. Often these two herb seeds are referred to as rasca, which was the case in the Slovak-English dictionary I just checked, when in fact they taste totally different. It doesn’t help that these seeds look almost identical. The article has a little story illustrating what happens when the two are confused. It’s cute.
Additionally on the site, there are some links that you may find of interest. There is a forum where questions can be posted on various topics, and through the link “Current Events” information is available on how to meet up with Czechs and Slovaks in your part of the world. This can be very important for those of us who feel the pull to meet up with fellow Czechs and Slovaks outside of Europe once in a while.
Even some of the ads on the site are interesting. I didn’t know there was a company that imported Czech and Slovak foods to the US and Canada. On the left-hand side of the main page there is a link to the JM Import Company. I was hoping they carried oštiepok but I’m out of luck. They do carry a variety of great wafer cookies and crackers though, such as my favorite Kakaove Rezy – Cocoa Wafers.
Overall, this website is very well done. I like how the site is very inclusive and invites visitors to participate in a variety of ways, either through leaving messages in the forum, participating in Czech and Slovak events, or simply commenting on articles. They’ve done an excellent job at creating a community, and for someone who lives so far away from Slovakia, this is definitely appreciated.

Ahoj to all. Just found an interesting and fun web site from the Czech Folks. It's www.slovakcooking.com This guy Lubos?? is a grad student in the DC area and shows how to make Slovakian ethnic food and also has a short language course as a side bar. He does a very good job in explaining grammar, etc... Check it out when you get a chance.... I loved the salatova polievka. Neskorrrrrrrr. Joe
