Finding Gold in the Slovak Hills

Posted by Margarete on 30 June 2008

I read some news that I thought was pretty cool: a company mining in the Žilina region announced a little over a week ago that they’ve discovered rich deposits of gold. The company, EMED Mining has been drilling in the hills east of Žilina. This is exciting news because gold has never been found in this area around Žilina before. And not only that, but it seems that there’s a lot of gold to be found.

According to the EMED Mining press release, “The first five drill holes at Slatinske Lazy are all strongly anomalous in gold over their entire length of approximately 250m each.” Their website also mentions something about mining for diamonds in Slovakia. That also was surprising information to me.

Certainly there is a rich mining tradition in Slovakia but the towns that are famous for gold and silver mining are Banská Štiavnica, famous for its large silver ore deposits and Kremnica, for its large gold deposits found in the Kremnica Mountains close by. Both Banská Štiavnica and Kremnica are attractive towns with charming historic centers. They’re great locations for foreigners to visit.
