Kde je... ? #3

Posted by Margarete on 29 May 2008

This looks like a photograph that was taken years ago, but it wasn’t. I took it with my old black and white Yashica camera about two years ago.

Where is it?

I think I saw this. I don't remember the buildings but I remember the statues. It's across the street from the Post office in Bratislava, right?

Yes it is. This is taken at Námestie SNP (SNP Square). I'm not sure what the name of the church in the background is but I love it. Since I'm a fan of architecture I know that it was designed and built by The Pittel and Brausewetter company, which was established out of Pressburg (Bratislava) in the 1870s. An old photo of the church I found has the name "Reformationskirche", which is most likely its former German name but I don't know the Slovak name. If someone knows I'd appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

Hi. I like this blog, is really fun to read and I'm very impressed. Now for the church, it belongs to "Reformed christian church" in Slovak it is "Reformovaná kresťanská cirkev" - those are Calvinists, I guess, so the german name you have found is true even now :) Keep going, I'm pleased with these "Kde je..." riddles. I wonder if you do now live in Slovakia or in U.S. and why are you so interested in our country. It amazes me, really, that you obviously like it so much... Regards and all the best from an impressed Slovak ;)

Thanks so much, Milena! For years I've wondered what the name of that church was.

Those statues are relatively new . . . within the past year, right?

I have no idea how long those statues have been there but I believe they've been there at least since 1999 when I arrived in Slovakia. Does anyone know when SNP square was redone?

Googling around reveals that the partisan statue was erected in 1974.

Thanks, Bob. Funny, I didn't think they had been there that long. Interesting... .
