Posted by Margarete on 20 May 2008

This entry is a part of the Slovak dialog series. Read the Introduction to Slovak Dialogs for more information.

The following dialog is provided as a sample of typical phrases and questions that may be spoken between a customer and a waiter/waitress at a restaurant.

A: Hello, would you like something to drink?

A: Dobrý deň, dáte si niečo na pitie?

B: Hello. Yes, I’d like a mineral water with no bubbles. And can I see a menu please? What are your specials of the day?

B: Dobrý deň. Áno, prosím si nesýtenú minerálnu vodu. A môžem dostať menu prosím? Aká je vaša ponuka dňa?

A: Here is the menu. Today’s specials are fried mushrooms with baked potatoes, segedinsky goulash, or chicken with rice. I’ll bring your drink right away.

A: Nech sa páči, tu je menu. Ponukou dňa sú vyprážané šampióny s pečenými zemiakmi, segedínsky guláš alebo kura s ryžou.

B: Thank you. I’ll order the chicken with rice. Does it come with any vegetables?

B: Ďakujem. Objednám si kura s ryžou. Podáva sa toto jedlo s nejakou zeleninou?

A: No, only a garnish

A: Nie, iba oblohou.

B: Ok. Then I’d like to also order a small plate of salad from the salad bar.

B: Dobre. Rad by som si teda ešte objednal malý tanier šalátu zo šalátoveho baru.

A: That will be fine.

A: V poriadku.

A: How was your lunch? Would you like anything else?

A: Ako vám chutil obed? Dáte si ešte niečo?

B: I’ll have a cup of coffee. Can I look at the menu again to see what you have for dessert?

B: Dám si kávu. Možem ešte raz vidieť menu a pozrieť sa na ponuku zákuskov?

A: Of course. Here you are.

A; Samozrejme. Nech sa páči.

B: Yes, I’d like coffee with milk, and a piece of strudel.

B: Áno, rád by som si objednal kávu s mliekom a kus štrúdly.
