All Signs Point to Euro
Euro currency adoption in Slovakia is slated for January 2009. The currency adoption is by no means guaranteed and there is still the possibility of a postponement, but as the date approaches and benchmarks continue to be met along the way, it looks as if in one year’s time Slovaks will have a new currency in their pockets.
Below is a list of important dates for the euro currency adoption in Slovakia if everything goes as planned:
June 2008 – The final exchange rate between the Slovak crown and the euro will be set.
July 1, 2008 to December 31, 2009 – Prices in both currencies are to be displayed.
January 1, 2009 – The euro becomes the official currency in Slovakia.
January 1, 2009 to January 16, 2009 – Both currencies will be accepted as form of payment. Change returned will be given only in euros.
June 30, 2009 – After this date, Slovak banks will no longer accept coins of Slovak crowns for exchange.
December 31, 2009 – After this date, Slovak banks will no longer accept paper currency of Slovak crowns for exchange.

I have recently visited Slovakia having family there. If I decided to live there temporarily, around the Bratislava area, what could I expect to pay for a cheaper flat or apartment. Could one live there for approximately 800$US per month?

Hi Carol, As far as rent goes "around the Bratislava area" and "in Bratislava" are two separate things. Rent in Bratislava is more expensive than in the outlying areas, though in towns outside of Bratislava such as Senec, Stupava, Pezinok, or Šamorin prices are on the rise as well. I just took a quick look at www.reality.sk and see that the cheapest apartments for rent in Nove Mesto, a part of Bratislava, is 13,000SKK a month, which is about $650. In Senec, outside of Bratislava, the price drops a bit to an average of 10,000SKK or $500. Could you live on approx $800 a month? Yes, but it would be a stretch.
