Dialog at a Doctor's Office

The following dialog is provided as a sample of typical phrases and questions that may be spoken at a doctor’s office.
A: Hello.
A: Dobrý deň.
B: Hello, doctor.
B: Dobrý deň, pán doktor.
A: How are you?
A: Ako sa máte?
B: Not so good. My throat really hurts especially when I swallow.
B: Nie veľmi dobre. Veľmi ma bolí1 ma hrdlo, najmä keď prehĺtam2.
A: Do you have a runny nose or a cough?
A: Máte nádchu3 alebo kašeľ?
B: No.
B: Nie.
A: Do you have any other pain? Do you have a stomach ache or do you have a headache?
A: Bolí Vás ešte niečo iné? Nemáte žalúdočné bolesti alebo bolesti hlavy?
B: No, I just have pain in my throat. I know it is not my tonsils because I had them taken out when I was a child.
B: Nie, bolí ma iba hrdlo. Viem, že to nie sú moje mandle, pretože tie som mal vybrané ešte ako dieťa.
A: Do you have a fever?
A: Máte horúčku4?
B: Yesterday I did, but today I don’t.
B: Včera som mal, ale dnes už nemám.
A: Ok. Let me take a look at your throat… I see that it’s very red and swollen. It looks like you have strep throat. I’m prescribing some antibiotics for you. After you start taking them, you should feel better within 24 hours. It’s very important for you to finish all of your medication, even when you feel fine.
A: Dobre. Pozrime sa na Vaše hrdlo… Vidím, že je veľmi červené a opuchnuté. Vyzerá to tak, že máte angínu5. Predpíšem Vám antibiotiká. Keď ich začnete užívať, do 24 hodín by ste sa mali cítiť lepšie. Je veľmi dôležité, aby ste užili všetky lieky, aj keď sa už budete cítiť dobre.
B: Ok, doctor. I understand. How long am I contagious?
B: Dobre, pán doktor, rozumiem. Ako dlho budem nákazlivý?
A: Not longer than 24 to 48 hours from the first dose of your medication. Stay home and rest for the remainder of the week.
A: Nie dlhšie ako 24 až 48 hodín od prvej dávky Vašich liekov. Zostaňte doma a oddychujte po zvyšok týždňa.
B: Thank you, doctor. I will.
B: Ďakujem, pán doktor. Budem.
1 The expression “mať bolesť ”, which literally means “to have pain” is used for the words “pain” and “hurt”. Therefore, “it hurts” translates to Slovak as “ma bolí”, which literally means “it has pain”.

“ma bolí”, is from the verb bolieť = to hurt, so that "Veľmi ma bolí hrdlo" translates as "throat hurts me a lot" Bolí ťa hrdlo = Throat hurts you. Bolí ho hrdlo = Throat hurts him. Bolí ju hrdlo = Throat hurts her. Bolí nás hrdlo = Throat hurts us. Bolí vás hrdlo = Throat hurts you. Bolí ich hrdlo = Throat hurts them. from mať bolesť you could have Mám bolesť v hrdle (I have pain in throat) or Má bolesť v hrdle (he or she has pain in throat) but that is with a long a. Otherwise its good. I have also been here 5 years.
